Thames & Hudson, Tasmanian Gardens

This is a celebration of Tasmanian gardens and their creators from coast to mountain, suburb to town, on land and on Country. It aims to reimagine the definition of garden. What makes a garden a garden? Not perfect lawns and beautiful borders, but people, places and their stories.

Every garden is a story and every gardener is a storyteller. Photographer Alice Bennett and author Meg Bignell explore the gardens and landscapes of Tasmania and unearth a whole library of tales told in plants, design, topography, weather and very hard work.

The design takes a curated maximalist approach—layered and expressive, yet refined. It nods to cottage-style charm, showcasing each garden’s personality through elongated compositions and vibrant imagery. Asymmetrical layouts, serif typography and generous margins reference field journals and antique novels.

Collage-inspired spreads, balanced with negative space, create rhythm and clarity. The result is a flexible, contemporary framework that appeals to both locals and visitors while celebrating Tasmanian gardens.
