NMA, Breathing Space

National Museum of Australia commissioned musician Genevieve Lacey to create new ways for audiences to engage with its iconic Garden of Australian Dreams. The result is Breathing Space – a rewilding in sound. The identity integrates both art and word. There is a balance of quietness, yet strength, due to the use of negative space and structured text layouts.

NMA, Breathing Space

The permanent sound installation, Breathing Space, divides the garden into six distinct areas, which pulse softly with human and fauna sounds. The compositions conjure mysterious living worlds and change subtly hour by hour, throughout the day, and across the seasons.

The soundscape comprises 21 musicians, 12 sound artists, and a
chorus of 32 voices speaking the powerful words of Alexis Wright,
which poetically call to listening and country.

The brief was to create an identity that felt poetic and sensitive, with
a feminine touch, while retaining a sense of quiet strength. The challenge lay in balancing artistic expression with broad audience appeal, ensuring the visual language resonated emotionally yet remained accessible.

The visual identity reflects this layered concept through a thoughtful balance of art and word. Deeply cropped patterns and textures create visual depth, while negative space and structured text provide quiet strength. Together, the design and soundscapes transform the garden into a living museum—inviting reflection and discovery.
