NGV, Plans for the Planet: Olaf Breuning

The NGV’s collaboration with artist Olaf Breuning invites children into an adventure playground where they can explore, create, and express their view of the world. Guided by a playful lava floor pathway, kids are encouraged to think creatively, make drawings, and discover more about the natural environment through this interactive exhibition.

NGV, Plans for the Planet: Olaf Breuning

Over a three-month period, the exhibition design process involved
hands-on collaboration across departments to bring Plans for the Planet: Olaf Breuning to life. By working closely with the exhibition design team, curator and artist, existing artworks were thoughtfully repurposed into large-scale graphic treatments, while maintaining the integrity of Olaf’s aesthetic.

Central to the experience was a custom vinyl floor graphic, designed as a playful take on the classic game ‘don’t touch the lava.’ Reflecting Olaf’s hyperrealist style, the floor transformed the space into a surreal landscape where children could jump, leap, and cross bridges along a carefully designed path. The pathway guided young visitors from one immersive room to the next, encouraging curiosity and movement.

Test printing and in-situ pinning of wayfinding ensured clarity throughout the space, while close coordination with Corporate Partnerships informed the thoughtful placement of logos. On install day, personal on-site direction ensured all elements were installed with precision and aligned with the creative intent.
